Sip & Sign
Between showings, sometimes you just need a cozy corner, strong Wi‑Fi, and a table big enough to spread out those MLS home sheets. These five locally‑loved cafés tick all the boxes—and each one sits within a short drive of today’s hottest listings.
1. Red Cup Café – Chesterton
Red Cup offers wonderful a hippy chic atmosphere with awesome coffee, chill music, and small-town-friendly service that can only be described as lovely. The food is tasty and eclectic with great veggie options, too. Take a seat on one of the comfy couches while admiring the local artwork. Wi‑Fi is reliable, and mid‑afternoon crowds are light—perfect for a quiet contract review.
Sipping address: 115 Broadway Ave, Chesterton
Bonnie's recommendation: The desserts are all exceptional, but I absolutely love the apple pie. If you need to walk it off, the quaint Thomas Centennial Park is just across the street.
2. Fluid Coffee Roasters – Valpo, Chesterton, MC, CP
FLUID gives off modern‑alt energy—neon signage, house‑roasted espresso, and baristas who’ll talk single‑origin beans if you have time. Four locations across Lake, Porter, and La Porte Counties feature cold brew on nitro tap, pour-overs, and hand-crafted lattes made with in-house scratch ingredients.
Sipping address: Three locations in Valparaiso; plus Crown Point, Michigan City, and Chesterton
Bonnie's recommendation: The Novus Ordo is next level. Vegan mocha, oat milk, orange, mesquite-smoked sea salt—easily one of the most unique coffee drinks I’ve ever had.
3. Lakeshore Cafe’
Located in the vibrant Uptown Arts District, Lakeshore Café feels like a lakeside cottage—nautical blues, shiplap counters, and an easygoing vibe. Fill a growler with cold brew if you’re beach-house shopping, or order the jade cloud tea—one of my favorite jasmines. Free parking, strong Wi-Fi, and homemade muffins that are well worth the carbs.
Sipping address: 444 Wabash Street, Michigan City
Bonnie's recommendation: Espresso or Americano, Nutella croissant, upstairs by the window. Trust me!
4. Joe's Bread
Technically a bakery, but the drinks menu rivals many big‑city cafés. Nab a French chapeau roll or half baguette and a cranberry sage iced tea to go—or enjoy them on the shaded patio. The menu is inventive and always changing. The seasonal market is a must-visit during the warmer months.
Sipping address: 225 South Calumet, Chesterton
Bonnie's recommendation: Go straight for the Croque Monsieur. Naturally leavened bread, rich béchamel, and just the right amount of indulgence. Pair it with a cortado or Americano—or chase it with the Cafè con Miel if you're feeling decadent.
5. The Coffee Press
Part of the Yaggy Road Roasting Company family, The Coffee Press champions direct-trade relationships with smallholder farms in Central and South America—ensuring fair pay, eco-friendly practices, and traceable beans from crop to cup. Its Lincolnway shop in downtown Valpo is paired with a same-family-owned "experiential bookstore" and wine bar, which provides the living'-the-good-life trifecta of "Reads, Roasts, and Refreshments."
Sipping address: 9 Lincolnway, Valparaiso
Bonnie's recommendation: Trust the roaster and try an Americano or espresso—and if you see the Papua New Guinea Bunum Wo—be sure to buy a bag to go, or order it later from Yaggy Road.
